DSPerf: network performance test tool

The performances of a network can be evaluated regardless four classes of factors:

  • Capabilities
  • Availability
  • Throughput
  • Security

The "capabilities" of a network refer to the ability to interface with a communication network for the purpose of communicating data to or from an IoT device. A network interface capability allows a device to be connected to and use a communication network. Every IoT device has at least one network interface capability and may have more than one;

The “availability” refers to the accessibility of the network. It is a measure of how well a computer network can respond to the connectivity and performance demands placed on it.

Network availability is a fundamental prerequisite for access to data and applications;

The digital “throughput”, refers to the rate of data that may be delivered over physical or logical links, or through network nodes.

It is the amount of information a system can process in a given amount of time, measured in bits, bytes, or data packets per second. Throughput is used to measure the efficiency and capacity of a system (e.g., network, storage device, or computer). Higher throughput means faster processing and more efficient performance;

“security” summarizes the ability of the network to ensure the peers identification, confidentiality and integrity of the transferred information.

Network security combines multiple layers of defenses at the edge and in the network. Each network security layer implements policies and controls.

The overall performance evaluation of a digital network consists in the aggregation of the performance measures of the individual transmission channels used.

Starting from these assumptions, we used a loopback technique between two nodes, source and destination, to measure the difference between the throughput of the Overlay DaaS Network and the throughput of the underlay network used regardless of heterogeneous transmission channels.
